JPG vs PNG: What Actually Changes?
PNG stores every pixel without further compression loss, which is useful for editing and sharp graphics. It does not make an existing JPG look better, and the file is usually larger.
| JPG | PNG | |
|---|---|---|
| Compression | Lossy (small files) | Lossless |
| Transparency | Not supported | Supported |
| Typical file size | Smaller | Larger for photos |
| Best for | Photos, forms, email | Logos, screenshots, graphics, editing |

When Do You Need PNG Instead of JPG?
- A design tool, print shop or website may ask for PNG specifically. That is the best reason to convert.
- Saving a JPG again and again loses more detail each time, so keep a PNG copy while you edit.
- PNG files made from photos are often much larger than the JPG. For forms with a size limit, keep the JPG and use the image compressor instead.
- A JPG has no transparency, so the PNG will not have any either. Remove the background in an image editor if you need that.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does converting JPG to PNG improve image quality?
No. The PNG keeps the image exactly as the JPG looks now, but it cannot restore detail that was already lost when the JPG was created.
Can I get a transparent background from a JPG?
Not by converting. A JPG has no transparency, so the PNG has none either. Remove the background in an image editor if you need a transparent PNG.
Which image formats can I use?
This tool accepts JPG and JPEG files and saves them as PNG. For other formats use PNG to JPG, WebP to JPG, PNG to WebP or the free image converter.
Why is the PNG larger than the JPG?
PNG stores pixels without lossy compression, so photos usually become larger files. The status next to each file shows how much larger it is.
Can I convert many JPG files at once?
Yes. Select or drop several JPG files together, press Convert to PNG and download each result. Each file is converted separately, so one failed file does not stop the others.
Are my photos uploaded to a server?
No. The conversion runs inside your browser. Your images are not sent to our server and we do not keep copies.
Why did my file fail to convert?
The file may not be a real JPG, may be damaged, or may be too large for your browser. The error message next to the file explains which one it is. Try a smaller size option for very large photos.
