How to merge PDF files

Combine PDF files in four steps, on phone or computer.

  1. Add your PDFs

Keep the PDF tab selected, then drop your files into the box or tap it to choose them.

  2. Set the order

The merged file follows the order of the list. Drag files, or use the arrow buttons, and remove any file you do not need.

  3. Press Merge files

Wait for the merge to finish. Large files can take longer.

  4. Download and check

Download the result and look through the pages before you share it.

To merge Word documents instead, open the Word files tab and add .docx files. The result is one Word file, not a PDF. To make a PDF from a Word file, use Word to PDF.

Tips for file order and privacy

A few checks that save you from re-doing the merge.

  • Check the order before you merge. The pages follow the list from top to bottom, and each PDF keeps all of its pages.
  • Name files so they sort clearly. Names like 01-cover, 02-report and 03-appendix make the order easy to see.
  • Use one tab at a time. PDFs and Word files are merged separately, so you cannot mix them in one run.
  • Remove the password first. Password-protected PDFs cannot be merged. Remove the password only if you have permission to.
  • Merge large sets in groups. Very large files use a lot of memory, especially on phones. Merge in smaller groups, then merge the results.
  • About privacy. The merge runs in your browser, and this tool does not upload your files. Your files are not encrypted by the tool. Keep sensitive documents safe on your own device, and close the tab when you finish.

Frequently asked questions

Quick answers about combining PDF files.

How do I combine PDF files into one?

Choose the PDF tab, add your files, put them in the order you want, then press Merge files and download the result.

Can I change the order of the files?

Yes. The files are merged in the order shown in the list. Drag a file to move it, or use the arrow buttons, and remove a file you do not need.

Is there a limit on files or size?

You can merge up to 20 files with about 100 MB combined. Very large files also depend on the memory of your device.

Are my files uploaded to a server?

The merge runs in your browser, and this tool does not upload your files. Your browser does download the merge libraries from a public CDN.

Can I merge password-protected PDFs?

No. Remove the password first, in the program that created the file, and only if you have permission to do so.

Will merging change the pages?

For PDFs, the pages are copied into the new file with their original size and orientation. Open the merged file and check it before you send it.

Can I merge Word files?

Yes. Choose the Word files tab and add .docx files. The result is one Word file that uses the first document's styles. Complex layouts, text boxes and numbered lists may need a quick check.

A file was rejected or the merge failed. What can I do?

Make sure the file type matches the selected tab. If a message names a file, that file may be damaged or protected, so export it again and retry. If the files are very large, merge fewer at a time.
