How to Convert PNG to WebP
Add your PNG images
Drop PNG files into the upload area or click it to browse. You can add many images at once.
Check the preview
Each image shows a preview with its file name, format, dimensions and size, so you can remove anything you do not need.
Choose the WebP quality
High (90%) is a good balance between sharpness and file size. Pick a lower setting for a smaller file.
Convert and download
Press Convert to WebP, then use Download WebP next to each image. The tool shows the original size, the WebP size and the actual difference for every file.
Supported formats and limits
- Input: PNG files, up to 50 images at a time and 50 MB each. Files that are not real PNG images are rejected with a message.
- Output: WebP (image/webp). Every converted file is checked to be a valid WebP before the download button appears.
- Transparency: transparent areas are not filled, so they are kept in the WebP in browsers that can create it.
- Browser support: creating WebP files works in Chrome, Edge and Firefox. If your browser cannot, the tool tells you instead of saving a wrong file.
PNG vs WebP: Which Format Should You Use?
WebP is made for websites and often gives smaller files than PNG, but the result depends on the picture. PNG is the safer choice when a program or form does not accept WebP.
| PNG | WebP | |
|---|---|---|
| Compression | Lossless | Lossy or lossless (this tool creates lossy WebP) |
| Transparency | Supported | Supported |
| File size | Depends on the image | Often smaller than PNG, but it varies |
| Best for | Logos, screenshots, graphics | Website and app images |
| Opens everywhere | Yes | Modern browsers and apps, not every older program |
Privacy and file handling
Your images are opened and converted by your own browser using its built-in Canvas feature. They are not sent to our server, and we do not keep copies. Read the full privacy policy.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will a WebP file be smaller than my PNG?
Often, but not always. The result depends on the picture and the quality you choose. After conversion the tool shows the original size, the WebP size and the actual difference, so you can see the real result for each file.
Does converting PNG to WebP reduce image quality?
This converter creates lossy WebP files, so a small amount of detail can be traded for a smaller file. At 90% quality or higher the difference is hard to notice in most photos. Sharp text and line art can look slightly softer, so use a higher quality for those, or keep the PNG.
Does WebP keep transparency?
Yes. WebP supports transparent backgrounds, and the converter does not fill transparent areas, so transparency is kept in browsers that can create WebP files.
Which browsers can create WebP files?
Chrome, Edge and Firefox can create WebP files from a canvas. If your browser cannot, the tool shows a message instead of saving a wrong file. WebP files open in modern browsers, but some older programs cannot open them.
Are my images uploaded to a server?
No. The conversion runs inside your browser using its built-in Canvas feature. Your images are not sent to our server and we do not keep copies.
Can I convert several PNG files at once?
Yes. Select or drop several PNG files together, press Convert to WebP and download each result. Each file is converted separately, so one failed file does not stop the others.
Why did my file fail to convert?
The file may not be a real PNG, may be damaged, or may be too large for your browser to process, or your browser may not support creating WebP files. The message next to the file explains which one it is. Try a smaller size setting for very large images.
